Autism Treatment Thru Chelation Therapy- Good or Bad?

Jean Genet

Chelation Therapy is a process of removing metals from the body. For children with autism the metal that causes the most damage is mercury. There is stabilizer in vaccines known as thimerisal. Thimerisal when injected into the blood stream of an infant becomes Ethylmercury. Ethylmercury is the second most dangerous neurotoxin on the planet. It invades the blood/brain barrier within two minutes of injection, attaches itself to the cell wall, and within two hours begins to alter the dna structure of the child while creating mercury poisoning. What are the symptoms of mercury poisoning; inability to form speech, lack of emotional contact and mental focus; the same symptoms that define autism. In 1943 through Johns Hopkins University and Hospital, the pharmaceutical company, Eli Lilly, called the symptoms of mercury poisoning, autism.

It would make common sense to find a way to remove mercury from these children with autism thinking that once the mercury is removed the child will be free of autism or this is the thinking of most parents. Unfortunately this not the case. The problem with Ethylmercury is that it is an inorganic substance which means that at least 85% of the mercury present in the cell structure become apart of the cell, it cannot be removed. So the question is, is removing the remaining 15% doing more harm than good?

Usually between 18 months and three years old the symptoms of autism appear in the child. By this time the mercury has already done its damage and becomes dormant in the cell structure. When you try to remove this mercury through chelation therapy you awaken the mercury from its dormant state and it becomes active again offering the possibility of doing more damage.

The FDA approves the use of DMSA as a chelation agent. A chemical that when injected into the blood stream of the child invades the blood/brain barrier and attaches itself to mercury, lead, and aluminum and extracts it out into the blood stream thus activating the chemicals. These metals flow through the blood into the organs and finally into the liver where it is excreted out through the bile. The possibility of exposing the body to more mercury poisoning should be a concern.

In the belief that removing mercury will end the symptoms of autism parents feel the need to start the process of chelation therapy immediately. Children as old as two years old are exposed to DMSA. Parents report that the child walks round like they have flu-like symptoms; lethargic, slight fever, muscle aches. Unfortunately, these are not the signs of that the chelation therapy is working as much as it is a sign that the body is being reinfected with these toxic metals.

The child should reach a weight 70 pounds before being exposed to chelation therapy. The parents should be aware before starting the therapy that it can take up to seven years to be affective. What is affective? Return of some speech, more emotional contact and mental focus. Does these small responses out weigh the time, extreme cost and the possible exposure to more harm? For those parents who can financially afford the therapy their response is usually positive (a response, more times than not, to justify the cost.)

It should be stated that some parents feel the use of natural herbs and transdermal creams have proven to chelate with less side-effects. Although the time for any benefit is extended.
