Parents On Leading Edge Of Autism Research

Jean Genet

When we hear the term "Leading Edge" we associate it with the leading edge of medicine. Usually this statement is followed by names of universities like Harvard, Princeton, or Stanford. Not so with autism. The people who are on the leading edge of finding out what works and doesn't work in addressing the myriad of problems associated with autism is the parents of children with autism.

These parents have been forced into this position due to the fact that the medical community still believes autism is a mental disorder which can only be managed. What parents are beginning to realize is that autistic like symptoms: inability to form speech, lack of emotional balance and little mental focus are brought on by a chemical imbalance that travels through out the body and literally upsets every functioning process.

Kitsa Arnet's son was experiencing sleeplessness and severe, non ending, tantrums. She had her son tested and found that he had insufficient magnesium levels. As soon as those magnesium levels were addressed he had no more sleepless nights or tantrums.

Melinda Allison son was chewing the ends of his fingers off. Was this severe response due to the medical assumption that anyone who would do this has a mental disorder? No, Melinda found out that her son had low levels of zinc and under proper care brought those levels back into balance. What was the result? Her son quit chewing the ends of his fingers.

Shirly Anderson was having the same problem as Kitsa Arnet's son with sleeplessness and tantrums. She found her solution in going to the vitamin store and picking up some melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone found in humans. The use of melatonin as a drug can have beneficial effects for treatment of certain insomnias.

Parents of children with autism now realize that one of the first steps in the treatment of autism is to have a chemical work up. Once insufficient levels are brought into balance the opportunity to end the child's experience with autism is greatly enhanced.
